Talk: Imaginaries of Artists and Advanced Computing

13. February 2020. Experimenta 2020, France

Magical solution to the great ills of this world for some, the beginnings of an ecological, social and moral apocalypse for others. Fantasy, everyday companion for some, enemy of free will and freedom for others, AI is everywhere and leaves no one indifferent. All research fields are affected by its progress.

From the object to the subject, from the tool to the subject, artistic creation also takes hold of AI, in ways as varied as the multitude of imaginations it summons. Between demystification, praise, criticism and other approaches, artists represent a keystone in understanding all these ambivalences. Long the protagonist of science fiction works, both dystopian and utopian, AI has long been thought by artists. How do they get hold of it? How does it change their look and shape their work? What new techniques, approaches, tools, artistic approaches result from it?
